Thierry Henry has once again been beaten to the European player of the year award, this time the winner was Fabio Cannavaro the Italian defender who lead his team to World Cup victory over France back in the summer. Henry came third in the award behind the Italian and his countryman Gianluigi Buffon.
Cannavaro is the fifth Italian player to recieve the award with the last one being Roberto Baggio in 1993. The award bares extra significance to the Real Madrid defender because he is the first player of his position to win it for 10 years.
